General info:

The first car was named the GT (for Grand Touring) with the 40 representing its overall height of 40 inches (1.02 m, measured at the windshield) as required by the rules. Large displacement Ford V8 engines (4.7 liter and 7 liter) were used, compared with the Ferrari V12 which displaced 3.0 liter or 4.0 liter.

Early cars were simply named “Ford GT”. The name “GT40” was the name of Ford’s project to prepare the cars for the international endurance racing circuit, and the quest to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The first 12 “prototype” vehicles carried serial numbers GT-101 through GT-112.

  1. in 1964 the chassis was burned before 103 and 104 were transferred to shelby racing. after shelby was done racing 104 it was sent back to fav were it sat until jwa rebuilt it as 1968 team car chassis 1084.

  2. Very interested in the progress of this restoration. Am attempting to build a scale model of this car(#73) or its companion(#72) at daytona 1965. Would you have blue prints or spec sheets? Particularly interested in how the front clip evolved from the body used at lemans in 1964.

  3. I have both the original front and rear bodywork of ~104 used at 65 Lemans. entered by Carrol Shelby and Rob Walker.
The mk11 bodywork was fitted in 1968.

They are both intact including wing mirrors and are as used at Lemans in 65 apart from being repainted in the USA and used for one race before being replaced with lightweight bodywork.

    1. Hello Peter
Can you snap a few photos and send them to me? I’ll send you an email so you have my email address. Thanks for dropping by and letting us know about the bodywork!
